1. General information
E FixIT is a JavaBeans component package which is used in creating server applications that connect to an
M server running VA FileMan database environment. The applications are built with Java and use
JavaServer Pages (JSP) technology as a link ( a glue ) between HTML and the server application;
applications are JavaBeans that act as a bridge between the HTML front end and database.
The document is meant to be used in conjunction with
FixIT Developer's Guide
, which can be
downloaded from the same place as this document and e FixIT.
E FixIT provides a way to create front ends similar to earlier Delphi/Web FixIT tools. It's not meant to
replace them, but rather provide a third alternative:
Delphi FixIT is best for creating PC executable programs ( thick clients ) that connect to a
FileMan database files.
Web FixIT is for creating Java applets that ase based on a thin client/server interaction. Applets
are applications that are first downloaded to the client browser and then executed in a Java Virtual
Machine within the browser.
E FixIT applications provide the thinnest client solution: The entire application processing remove
from the client. The application resides by a www server.
The e FixIT package is based on Web FixIT which in turn has been developed on the basis of Delphi
FixIT. As the application building contains much the same as in Web/Delphi FixIT, a development tool
such as JBuilder is very useful.
There is a demonstration e FixIT application available at
http://kettinki.uku.fi/edemo/demo.jsp
. The
application demonstrates most of e FixIT package's abilities:
User validation
Session handling
Queries
(finding a pointer value for a field or navigating between records of a file)
FileMan reports
Subfiles
(logical and hierarchical)
Various FileMan field types and corresponding HTML elements
Two dimensional grid containing database records
Extracting XML parsed information from a FileMan database
Chapter 2
contains information about the structure of the e FixIT architecture.
Chapter 3
describes the software needs of the e FixIT package.
Chapters 4
describes the steps needed to use the e FixIT package with JBuilder.
Chapter 5
includes a diagram about an e FixIT application's structure.
In
chapters 6 to 7
there is a detailed example of building an e FixIT application with a form wizard tool.
Chapter 8
contains information about distributing e FixIT applications.
