Appendix 9: Hardware Frequently Asked Questions
1.
Can I use my existing PC satellite receiver with the ASTRA proxy client?
Yes, provided the ASTRA proxy installation and test program is able to detect your receiver properly.
Then, the program can utilize the configuration of the ASTRA proxy client software on your satellite
receiver.
The transponder and service parameter you have to enter in the control application of your existing PC
satellite receiver are mentioned chapter 9
2.
How can I find out the MAC address of my PC DVB S receiver ?
The MAC address is the globally unique address of a network card consisting of 12 hexadecimal
digits. You may need this address when you register to ASTRA Broadband services for the first time.
Normally, the MAC address of your satellite receiver is either displayed by the provided control
application or it is labelled directly on the adapter.
The installation and test program for the ASTRA proxy client is also able to detect the MAC address of
your receiver hardware in step 2 of the installation. In case you don't use this program, please follow
these steps:

On Win9x/ME click on Start

Run and enter winipcfg . Click on OK and select your
satellite receiver from the list. The MAC address is the value in the field adapter address .

On Windows 2000/XP click on Start

Run and enter cmd . Click on OK . On the
command line enter ipconfig /all and press . Eventually you need to scroll up the
screen output. Find your satellite receiver and take the value physical address .
3.
Why does the TechnoTrend DVBsat PCI budged adapter have the IP address
192.168.44.xx? Where does it get this address from? I would have expected another address. What if
my (local) subnet accidentally used the same address?
In order to connect a physical network interface i.e. the satellite receiver, to a network it requires an IP
address. This address is arbitrary and currently fixed by the manufacturer to any private class C
address. This can lead to conflicts of course, no matter how unlikely this might be, and it can be
resolved by assigning a different IP address to the receiver.
