50 The Bible and the Future of the World
`Have you not read this scripture: The very stone which the builders
rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it
is marvelous in our eyes ?' (Mark 12:10 11).
The cloth which had covered Jesus' head was in a place by itself,
signifying that the leadership of the Church is not merely a reflection of its
members' understanding and beliefs, but has a place by itself apart from and
above the other members of the Church.
It is said that in my country, the United States, at this time (2001), most
Catholics do not believe and do not follow certain teachings of the Church
(this is prior to the transfiguration of the Church). Even so, the leadership of
the Church ought not to change the Church's teaching to reflect what most
members would want. The leaders of the Church have a place, a task, and a
responsibility above and apart from the other members, to teach the teaching
of Christ Jesus, whether it is welcome or unwelcome. And every member of
the Church who loves Jesus and who loves Truth should act as John acted.
John waited for Peter and then followed him into the tomb, and he saw
and believed.
No, the leaders of Christ's Church will not abandon past teachings in
order to conform to the misguided understandings and beliefs of those who
oppose the Church's teaching on faith and morals. This is not what I mean
when I say that sometimes the members understand first. The Church's
teaching will deepen as the Church's understanding deepens. But the
Church will never reverse Her teaching, because the Church's teaching is
God's teaching, without exception.
Some theologians argue against the teaching of the Church. They have
intelligence and advanced University degrees. At the present time, some
have the support and approval of many Christians. But these theologians do
not teach the truth. God who is Truth will correct them.
Some theologians and priests and religious like to point out apparent
contradictions in God's Holy Infallible Scripture. It gives them more
authority as teachers when they weaken the authority of Holy Scripture.
They receive praise, honor, and support from those Christians who do not
want to believe all that Holy Scripture teaches (lest they be required to
change their lives). If any theologian or priest or religious refuses to repent
from opposing the Church's teaching, such persons will be severely punished
by God.
Some of these teachers of falsehoods have honor and respect and power
and many followers. Soon they will have none of these things. The Church
will be renewed and many who were weak in faith will be strengthened by
God. Soon these false teachers will lose their following and their power.
Soon most Catholics will believe all that the Church teaches, without
exception.
