Note

If devices have multiple IP addresses (such as routers), you must specify the 

correct community string for all IP addresses. Devices that include an MSFC must 

ensure that the MSFC community strings are different from the chassis. The 

MSFC information is now editable. Due to hardware problems, you can change 

the MSFC data to ensure its accuracy.

Additionally, if a device supports SNMP v2, the Hosting Solution Engine 

communicates with the device in SNMP v2 mode. Specifically, the Hosting 

Solution Engine uses the SNMP Settings command to retrieve large chunks of 

information at a time, resulting in faster communication between the Hosting 

Solution Engine and the network devices.

Modifying SNMP Settings

Make sure that the SNMP settings on the Hosting Solution Engine correspond to 

the settings on your network devices.

Default community strings are public for the read only string and public for the 

read write string. If the community strings on your device differ from these 

settings, you must edit the community strings before initiating the discovery 

process.

In addition to editing the read and write access of your devices, you can also 

modify the SNMP retries and timeout duration.

Use this information to change community strings, SNMP retries, and SNMP 

timeouts on the Hosting Solution Engine. When you make changes to the 

community strings, the changes will take effect only when you run a manual 

discovery (see 

Running Device Discovery, page 4 25

).
