Discovery: Overview
If your devices use the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), then the Discovery
option is a useful tool. If your devices are not CDP enabled, see
Adding Devices,
page 4 5
, for instructions on how to add devices to your HSE database.
If CDP is enabled, the Hosting Solution Engine automatically discovers Cisco,
CDP enabled devices once a day.
To do this, the Hosting Solution Engine must have access to your network devices
and be provided with a discovery starting point.
Tip
Before you can discover your network devices, you must set up your network
devices. See
Setting Up Your Network, page 4 10
for steps on setting up specific
devices in your network.
You provide access by ensuring that the community strings on your devices are
known to the Hosting Solution Engine (see
Modifying SNMP Settings,
page 4 36
). You provide a starting point by specifying a
seed
device (or set of
seed devices) to initiate discovery (see
Adding Devices, page 4 5
).
Note
The LocalDirector, the PIX firewall, and the Content Services Switch do not
support CDP and must be added as seed devices.
The Hosting Solution Engine discovers device information about your devices,
such as device identity, module information, and port information.
The Hosting Solution Engine uses the read community string for discovery. The
Hosting Solution Engine uses the write community strings to configure devices.
Default community strings are public for the read only string and public for the
read write string. If the community strings on your devices differ from these
settings, you must edit the community strings (see
Modifying SNMP Settings,
page 4 36
) before initiating the discovery process.
