Appendix I: Chart 4
Months of the Macedonian, Jewish, and Julian Calendars
The columns below show the general synchronization between the Julian, Jewish, and Macedonian
calendars. In a Jewish leap year, a 13th month of AdarII is added, pushing Nisan into April/May. In advance
of a leap year, Tishri may fall as early as August/Sept.
The Jewish and Macedonian calendars are both lunar calendars, but the leap month in the Macedonian
calendar is Artemisios (corresponding to Iyar), not Dystros (corresponding to AdarI). This results in the two
calendars moving out of synch with one another for a couple of months, when the leap year is the same in
both calendar systems. But if different years were chosen for the leap year in the Jewish and Macedonian
calendars, then the calendars would be out of synch for more than a year. (See Charts 5 and 6 for more on this
point.)
